The island first gained a reputation as a nude swimming-hole in the 60s and has served as a sanctuary for the homeless throughout its history. It was become recognized by scientists and botanists for its biological diversity and gained a reputation as an ideal spot for nature identification walks. Today the island is mostly known as a spot for nude sunbathing.
